How to search Belmont County deeds

Search Belmont County deeds free on the Recorder's online system: log in as a guest and search by the buyer's or seller's name; deeds from 1974 on are indexed by name. For older deeds, find the name in the scanned handwritten index books (Historic Indexes on the same site), then open the deed image by book and page, back to 1801.

Numbers as of October 22, 2026, from the county records loaded that day (Recorder documents through October 21, 2026). Office details checked on the offices' own sites on October 22, 2026.

How do I search deeds on the Recorder's site?

  1. Open the Recorder's site, belmontcountyrecorder.org, and choose Search Records. It opens the county's online records system.
  2. Choose Login as Guest and accept the terms.
  3. Search by name. You can search either side of a deed (grantor, the seller, or grantee, the buyer) or both, and narrow it by date range and document type.
  4. Read the legal description in each result to make sure it is the same land: the county indexes by name only, so a common surname brings back other people's deeds.
  5. Note the book and page or instrument number. That is what the Recorder's staff and the Auditor need.

How far back can I search online?

From the Recorder's own search guide:

RecordOlder booksSearchable by name
Deeds1801 to 1974: images, find by book and page1974 on: searchable by name (1974 to 1979 indexing not yet verified by the office)
Mortgages1850 to 1974: images, find by book and page1974 on: searchable by name
Oil and gas leases1866 to 1974: images, find by book and page1974 on: searchable by name

How do I find a deed from before 1974?

Before 1974 the county kept handwritten index books by surname. They are scanned on the Recorder's site under Historic Indexes. Find the right book for the surname and year, read across to the deed's volume and page, then open that volume and page in the image search. Paper Trail's Pre-1974 tab tells you which book covers a surname and year, and shows entries already typed from the books.

What does a copy cost?

$0.10 a page for copies you print yourself in the Record Room, $2.00 a page for copies made by the staff (Recorder's FAQ). The Recorder does not do title searches, but the staff will explain how the records are organized.
